SXSW 2012 Day Three Recap

This is post 4 of 8 in the SXSW 2012 series

SXSW has been quite the whirlwind of change this year, and Sunday was no different. The day started out kind of messy, with a bit of cold drizzle in the morning as I rushed off to several sessions about how brands like RadioShack are using social media, why it’s important to have an authentic voice, and why it’s important to having a human feel to the brand. Hopefully if you interact with RadioShack here, on Twitter, or on Facebook, you get a feel for the people (mostly Paige and me) behind RadioShack and enjoy the stuff we talk about.

Connecting to other people has really been a big topic at SXSW, as well. Storytelling is a major theme to most of the content-related sessions, and you can’t tell stories without connecting with the people who are listening to it. This is my third SXSW to attend and as usual, I’ve been able to meet folks from all over the place that do really interesting things. I stopped by the Boxee get-together on Sunday, invited by our friends at Android and Me, and had a great time talking to fellow nerds about Android and the various new devices and apps.

I’m also surprised to see the various devices that people are using. Obviously out on the street, it’s iPhones and Android. In the sessions, though, I am seeing many folks still using full-blown laptops – both PCs and Macs. Being RadioShack, we want to make sure that even if you’re not at SXSW this year, you can be productive with technology all the same.

Paige and I will be at SXSW through tomorrow, and all of our coverage will be here on The Shack Blog, as well as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Follow us there and be sure to check back for all the action!

We want to hear about the cool connections that you’ve made with other people. Leave your story in the comments below, and we’ll pick two random comments to get a brand new laptop that will hopefully help you be productive and keep connecting with others.

One comment/entry per person. Contest begins at 2:00 pm CST on March 12, 2012 and ends at 1:59 pm CST on March 13, 2012. Winner will be chosen randomly by RadioShack and announced after 2:00 pm CST on March 14, 2012.

No payment or purchase necessary to win. Neither a purchase nor payment will improve your chances of winning. While you’re pretty cool in our book, you are not a winner of this contest yet. Void where prohibited. Must be a resident of the 50 United States to win.

Updated 3/14/12: Thanks to everyone for commenting! Congrats to Larry and Sean S. on winning a brand new lap top!

Cool connections that I’ve made with other people, where do i begin??
I’d say twitter has been sooooo essential in helping me make cool connections with other people.
I’ve reconnected with people I’ve lost contact with after many years, and made so many new friends who share interests with me. I’ve gone from being a homebody, to going out with my new friends– especially to concerts. And twitter has helped me keep in contact with people who i meet out at events. Love it!

I would say I made some cool connections when I used to work at RSH. Its always great to see how a mutual interest in technology can help strike a common cord with people. Even if the technology isnt always used for communication, like your arduino kits, it can help strike up a conversation. Got to talk to this professor about him using an arduino kit in making a muscle-computer interface to help control a prosthetic. Told him I was a student in the science field and he gave me his number and told me to keep in touch :) Just one of the many ways technology keeps people in touch — it doesnt even have to be mobility.

I love to make connections! Twitter and Facebook have really helped me to connect with people – both new and old. I love that you can keep up with everyone and everything using these sites. I really love how so many of the devices allow us to follow and keep up with everything even on the go. I love meeting and connecting with new people and a laptop sure would help. Thanks

Over the years it has been easier to connect with the world and the people around you via social networking websites and the rapid improvement of smart phones. I can connect on the go or connect at home.

  • Lauren

Nothing has connected me more than my iPhone! I really didn’t know what I was missing without it. Love having FB and Twitter on the go so that I can know where to catch up with all my favorite people…no matter which city I go to. At the end of the day and at work, though, it’s a trusty laptop to the rescue. There’s just something about a full keyboard and big screen that can’tbe replaced in my book…..and mine died about 3 months ago,,,so I could use a replacement ;)

I would consider myself to be very social. I love meeting and talking to new people. I feel like I could strike up a conversation and talk to anyone for hours. I really wish I could have been able to attend SXSW this year. You can meet so many new and great people and learn a lot about some new and exciting products in the process. I love how technology had allowed us to connect and stay in touch with people and can’t wait to see what the future will bring!

  • Vince

Although not technology related, I recently started participating in the local farmer’s market in my community. It has been a pleasure to get to know the people in my community.

  • Jan

I love how I can connect with people for work. My job requires staying in contact with people and I always use FaceTime or Skype to connect face to face with my customers. Technology has helped me out tremendously! Now social media sites have made it easy to keep in touch and meet new people. I love the advances we have made.

  • Dee

I love to connect and meet new people. I always try to attend social events where I can see some familiar faces and meet new people. Sounds like you are having a blast meeting up with everyone at SXSW in Austin. Can’t wait to see photos and video and hear all about your trip!

  • Sean S

I am a college student so everyday on campus, I attempt to meet one new person per day. It might just be a single “hello” while we are waiting in line for coffee or a longer conversation about the homework we had in biology class. I am an introvert by nature so I have to force myself to reach out to strangers. I have been rewarded by making connections to people that I otherwise would not have meet. It feels great to walk around campus and have a growing circle of friends.

Thanks for the awesome giveaway! A laptop would really help me ace my classes!

  • Melissa

How cool it must be for you to be in Austin right now having a blast! I envy you a little right now as I am stuck here in my office cubicle. I would love to be out there walking the streets meeting new and exciting people. I love connecting and making new acquaintances and being able to stay in touch with them through Facebook as well as other sites. I just hope you are staying high and dry there. Have fun for me. Thanks for the posts and keeping us informed.

  • Monica

I always try to make connections with everyone that I meet – either by phone, facebook, twitter or email! With all of the news that we are able to communicate, I am able to better build relationships with people that I don’t ordinarily see on a day to day basis. When I was pregnant I “met” a group of moms and moms-to-be online and we have become the closest group of friends imaginable… and that was 4 years ago! We all talk on a daily basis through our facebook group or by texting! A new laptop would be a great way to help me keep in touch with some of my closest buddies!

  • Larry

My latest cool connection is someone I have known for years and have taken for granted. It’s my mom. Now that I am in my mid-thirties, I am getting to know my mom as a person and not as a mom. Email, Facebook and video chat help us keep connected even though we live far apart.

If I did win one of the laptops, I would give it to my mom since her computer is getting long in the tooth.

Thanks for letting me share my story Radio Shack and offering such a generous giveaway!

  • Ryan

I am also in school so I am always meeting and getting to know new people. I love how easy it is to connect and work on projects with the devices we have. Makes it so much easier for everyone to work together even when we are away.

  • R. Casey

I like to use social networks to keep in touch or stay connected with people I otherwise would not stay in contact with.

  • Andrew

I connect with my phone every day. Glad i brought it here to sxsw. Been great for taking pictures and catching up eith everyone. Haven’t run into you guys yet but i hope to find ya!

  • Tracy Parral

I use facebook and twitter to connect with other people. I have made many friends since joining twitter and facebook and I love it. It’s a great way to meet people that you would never be able to. I love going to facebook and chatting with a friend, helps to know others feel the same way I do or are just there to listen to my day and I to theirs.

  • Cary

Today, connections are all about mobility. We connect with others no matter where we are, or where they are. Geography is no longer a limitation. That is what I love most about technology. At a recent conference I was able to meet a number of experts in my field and through social media I have been able to mantain those new relationships and give and receive advice. That has been invaluable!

  • Marilyn

I have been reconnecting with old college buddies from years past using Facebook. After doing a little searching and I have been able to find a few of my close friends that I lost touch with over the years. Also it has been interesting to see if I can find some of my old crushes. They all have families now and it is nice to see that everyones life turned out so good.

Thanks for the fabulous giveaway! I could really use a laptop now that I am doing more traveling since I retired.

  • Lizzy

I have made lots of new friends by exploring my interests via the internet. I have joined a knitting group online and we share patterns, techniques and our life stories. I have never meet anyone in the group in person but I know if we ever got together we would greet each other with a hug.

I would love to win my first laptop! Having a computer you can tote around with you would be heaven!

  • Li

I use facebook and google chat to connect with others. And I try to connect with famous people on twitter but they always ignore me lol

  • Kim

The advances in tech in the last few years, have made connecting with my family easier than ever. We all live in different states so using skype helps us keep connected. I love to see my sisters smile and to make her laugh.

Thanks for the chance to win a laptop. Good luck to everyone who entered. I loved reading your stories.

  • Cade

I love to blog and connect with new bloggers. I have met so many amazing people and love to read about everything they do. I keep up with them using either GFC or Google + I have met so many great friends and can’t wait to meet more.

  • Alan

In my line if work I am always having to connect with new people and stay in touch with old customers. That is the best part of my job! The more new contacts and connections I make the more fun I seem to have. I love going to trade shows and swap meets in my spare time. I am a people person.

  • Courtney N

I am big into music and pictures but I also like to stay connected, so I take my smart phone with me everywhere I go. It’s read to be able to stay in touch on the go but have a camera and mp3 player handy at all times.

  • Kim C

I have made connections with people using Facebook and Twitter. I have kept in touch with lots of my family that live far away from me, I love that I can always keep up with them everyday through a posting. And I have met so many people on Twitter that I now consider friends. I love that I am able to relate to and connect with so many moms on Twitter, its great when you need some advice or just a suggestion from a person across the US that you have never met but have so much in common. It’s amazing what social media has done for so many.

  • Steve

By nature I am not a social person. I am very shy when it comes to meeting new people face to face. That is why I love the computer to comment with new people. I can hide behind the screen and still meet new people! I am always getting on Facebook and Twitter to connect and meet with new people. I don’t know what I would do without it.

  • Frank

I have a hard time with technology but have recently been getting better at using the computer. As an older man who has lost touch with a lot of high school friends, the internet has been a great way to get back in contact with people from my past. Now if only I could figure out how to use a smart phone…

  • Josh

I love making connections with new people. I am always trading my info with other that I meet to stay in touch. You never know when you might need to call on them and ask a favor or vise versa. You never can have too many friends in your life.

  • Darlene Jenkins

“My daughter’s father and I separated when she was very young and she grew up without him in her life. I recently used Facebook to locate him and connected with him online. He was so excited to finally meet her and be a part of her life, if she was interested in meeting him. (He’d kept from contacting her for fear that she’d been raised by someone else who she thought was her father and didn’t want to upset her with the truth.) It’s been a few years now and they have met and my daughter has met her entire other side of the family. They all keep in touch through Facebook and their iPhones and she is able to share her life with them. Technology is an amazing way to connect people in a real way!”

  • Roy

Everything in life deals with making connections and staying in touch with other people. It is easier than ever to meet up and then follow up with new people you meet. I try to be as friendly and approachable as possible so that ai can expand my network of friends.

  • Linda

I recently started a blog about my life with a chronic immune disease. I’m hoping it will get me connected to others with my condition and will inspire others to always keep the faith through the difficult times.

  • Bobby C

“Facebook has been a great way for me to stay in touch with my family and friends, but I love the way people share information on Twitter. I follow a lot of celebrities from my favorite shows, so it’s fun to feel like I’m keeping up with them, but I also follow a lot of bloggers who write about new technology and do-it-yourself tips, artists, news anchors, etc. I think having a way to freely share information and knowledge is a powerful tool for our society to be able to connect people from all walks of life.”

  • Andy

I connected with an old hunting buddy on facebook and now he’s bringing me on a great trip up north to try our luck there. Never would have been able to do that without the internet.

  • Jackson

I love traveling and meeting new people. I would love to have a laptop to keep up with people while on the road. Meeting new people across the country and hearing their stories is the reason why I travel as much as I do. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences with us and hosting the giveaway

  • Kay Z

I have been fortunate to meet people from all over the world. My family and I were visiting my father last August and happened to over hear some other travelers in the airport in Atlanta on the way home. Turned out they were from the same town overseas that my husband is from & they were also traveling to Austin to attend UT. It just goes to remind us that it really is a small world afterall!

  • Carolina Dhabolt

I have made alot of friends through Facebook and other social networks, it is amazing how you can meet people just like you living in different places thanks to technology. I have a great friend down in Texas, I did not meet her online but I stay connected with her through our chats, phone calls, Skype. I am in love with technology and my tech toys, it keeps us close ♥

  • Kenia

At first I was hesitant to make a facebook and twitter account. I ending up opening a facebook account because a good friend of mine had moved away and I wanted to keep in touch with her, after some time I had all my family and long lost friends in my account. I’m so happy I was decided to open an account because it is a very good way to stay in touch with loved ones.

After several months of having facebook I decided to open a twitter account. It took me some time to get the hang of it but I’m glad I did. I have made so many good friends! You can also interact more with companies and what they have to offer!!

Now I can’t live without any of the two =]

  • Howard

Is it still open to enter? I see there are entries after the 2:00 deadline. I love to meet and keep up with people on Facebook and twitter as well.

My phone and facebook app keeps me connected. I’m a mom of 5! So always busy, but Always have my phone on me. So when I do have a few minutes, easy to whip it out and catch up!
