Peek Inside Ricky’s SXSW Gearbag

This is post 5 of 5 in the SXSW 2012 series

One of the things I’m often asked when I go to events such as SXSW is “What on earth do you carry in your bag?” I’ve actually used the same bag for years, but the contents have changed a bit over the years, so I thought I’d share the full details of what I carry with me all day long.

Ricky's Gadget Bag

1. Mossimo messenger bag – I got the bag at Target a few years ago for about $20. It has since been discontinued, but the real key (and something to look for if you’re shopping for a gadget bag) is the multiple pockets in different sizes. It makes it really easy to find exactly what I’m looking for, since everything is in a separate place. Bags that only have one large pocket make it really difficult to be efficient. RadioShack has a great selection of messenger-style bags, which I prefer for easy access.

2. Apple iPad 2 16GB WiFi – I’ve tested a handful of different tablets, but the iPad wins for battery life and simple ease of use. All of the blog posts that I wrote during SXSW were written entirely on the iPad’s onscreen keyboard. I did bring my laptop in a separate bag, but only hardly turned it on. You certainly don’t want to tote a laptop around in your bag all day.

3. Targus 360 iPad case – I love this case because it protects my iPad, but it also has a built-in stand that allows you to prop your iPad up in either portrait or landscape. It’s real leather on the outside and soft on the inside. You should be able to find this at your local RadioShack store.

4. Apple iPhone 4S (AT&T) – We use Instagram quite often to share photos, and the iPhone 4S is (currently) the only way to access that, so that’s why I carry this. I also have RadioShack’s Twitter accounts loaded up, so I can manage things while moving.

5. Enercell Portable Power bank – these little boxes of magic are essential. Each contains a 2,400mAh battery that can be recharged via USB. You can then connect anything that charges via USB (like pretty much any smartphone nowadays) and get nearly 2 full charges off a single Enercell. When you carry multiple phones, you carry multiple Enercells. They’re awesome, though.

6. Motorola DROID RAZR (Verizon) – The DROID RAZR’s battery life is insane, and with Verizon’s 4G LTE network and personal hotspot service activated, this thing is a must-have to stay connected. AT&T’s 3G network did surprisingly well at SXSW this year, but so few people have LTE phones that the network is wide open and blazing fast.

7. Business cards – there are hundreds of cool new ways to trade information using your smartphone these days, but nothing is as tried and true as handing over a small piece of cardstock paper with your info on it. Ours have cool designs on the back, too.

8. Bose in-ear headphones – I’ve used these for years, and I absolutely love them because they do a fantastic job of keeping my music to me. I’ve been seated next to someone on an airplane, had these plugged into my iPod, and been blasting the TRON soundtrack as loud as possible without the other person hearing anything. Plus, they’re incredibly comfortable.

9. Spare chargers – You never know when you’ll have access to an outlet, so I usually carry a couple of AC chargers, too.

10. Aspirin – When you’re walking around outdoors all day and rushing from place to place, you’re almost guaranteed to get a headache, so I keep some aspirin handy, just in case.

Not pictured, but I also usually have my personal phone, an HTC Sensation 4G (T-Mobile) on me, too.

What’s in your gadget bag? Share you photos below, tweet them to @RadioShack (tag them #gadgetbag so we can find them easily) or share them with @RadioShack on Instagram (again, use the #gadgetbag tag).

I don’t leave home for a trip without my ipad either. The laptop is too bulky. I’m not quite as teched out as you so don’t have the plethora of gadgets. I do love my awesome leather Case Crown ipad case though!

We have the same ipad case =] It is awesome!! I have 2 year old twins and I carry everything in a diaper style bag. I have to take their leap pads and take the ipad for backup LOL The leap pad battery life isn’t that good. This gadgets really help when I’m at the doctors office or waiting anywhere else, If I wouldn’t take them I would have my tazmian devils running all around!
