[...] The Shack® Blog » Q&A With Massimo Banzi: Cofounder of Arduino. Massimo Banzi dropped into RadioShack headquarters last week, and we couldn’t help but squeal like starstruck girls at a Bieber concert. This is the man responsible for Arduino, the open-source programmable microcontroller that essentially breathes life into electronics projects. It has allowed those with no prior engineering or programming experience to build amazing gadgets, like remote-control lawnmowers and robotic marimba players. It’s an amazing device that’s revolutionizing DIY electronics, but don’t take our word for it. We sat down for a little Q&A with Massimo, so we’ll let the man himself tell you how he went from just a kid who liked to tinker with things to the instigator of the open-source revolution.
IMO, this highly active, collaborative and globally connected DIY generation (ie Makers, Open Source, hardware hackers, tech bloggers, youtubers, inventors etc) is only in its infancy of what can happen 15-20 years from now. Since the large corporate giants have all but dismissed or ignored the small or individual creative entrepreneur, the latter will create new ways to work around the high costs and lack of suitable products offered by the former. This will most likely bring a mass of new small globally connected businesses, alternate collaboration and marketing methods the status quo will not be nimble enough to survive their own pending obsolescence. I expect to see a wealth of new technology products available at a fraction of current costs without even the need of slave manufacturing practices around the world.

Nice article.I too grew up building and experimenting and building with electronic components from Radio Shack.

A novice could go in and purchase semi-conductors, LED's, transistors, resistors etc.... Now everthing has changed in "The Shack". Like Norman said it should be called "Cell Phone Shack" Lol.

It's good to see this new DIY technology being promoted. I'm looking forward to learning more.
