Top Android Tablet Apps

Now that you’ve got an awesome new Android tablet, it’s time to get some apps. Sure, you’ll want to download some games, a flashlight and a few other no-brainers, but we’ve listed some of our favorites below to really make the most of your lean, mean productivity machine.

Amazon Kindle
Hey Amazon Kindle app, we’ve got a bone to pick with you. We heard that students can now rent textbooks for 30 days for something like 80% off the list price of the printed book. Nice! Where were you when we were selling our Van Halen records to help cover fall semester’s books? Of course we didn’t have an Android tablet to use the app on when we were in college anyway, but that’s neither here nor there.

Cut the Rope
Move over Angry Birds, and make way for Om Nom. If you haven’t already fallen in love with the little green guy, it’s probably because you haven’t downloaded Cut the Rope yet. Go ahead, we’ll wait. OK, NOW you see what we’re talking about, right? We know the game’s just simple physics – slice this rope to drop that there; cut that rope to drop this here – but we just can’t get enough of it. And besides, we don’t want Om Nom to go hungry, now do we?

Dropbox
What’s your favorite kind of cloud: stratus, cirrus or maybe the vaunted cumulonimbus? Our favorite formation is a relatively new one called “file sharing.” Surely you’ve see it, it’s the one shaped like a hard drive that stores all kinds of files. OK, we know, it was kind of a trick question, but seriously, we love the idea that thanks to cloud-based file sharing, we can upload our music, pics and docs from our computer and access them right from our Android tablet using the Dropbox app. It sure beats lugging a box of floppies around!

Evernote
Taking notes stinks. You’ve gotta find a pen that writes, then you have all these slips of paper stuffed in your pocket and pretty soon your wife’s calling you at the store making sure you don’t forget the cheesecloth. Really, a cheesecloth? Wait a second, is that just our problem? Well, surely you’ve encountered a similar issue with handwritten notes at some point. Our recommendation: Get the Evernote app on your tablet. We love it. The app syncs across all our devices, so even if we leave that all-important grocery list on the home computer, the info’s synched right to our tablet. Now if it could just tell me which aisle has the rutabaga.

IMDb
True story, on a Hollywood bus tour recently, our driver saw a woman shopping on Rodeo Drive and asked, “Isn’t she that one girl from that one comedy?” Yes, we actually paid for this tour. But thanks to the IMDb app on our Android tablet, and some better guesses from the people sitting around us, we were able to uncover the starlet’s identity in no time flat. And did you know her parents put her in beauty pageants when she was only 3 years old? OK, so maybe IMDb gives you a little TMI at times, but it’s still a great place to go to identify that one person from that one show.

iTriage Mobile Health (Tablet)
You can set up a tent right outside your doctor’s office every time you skin a knee or come down with a case of the sniffles, or you can download the iTriage Mobile Health app to your Android tablet instead. Created by two ER docs, this free app acts as a symptom checker, doctor finder and all-around awesome medical reference tool. While we don’t recommend your giving the app permission to perform any kind of invasive surgery, it’s probably smart enough to wrap a twisted ankle…or at least show you how to do it properly.

Quickoffice® Pro HD
If the only reason you still carry a heavy laptop around is so you can be productive on the go, tell that bulky beast to shape up or ship out. Thanks to the Quickoffice® Pro HD app, now you can finish a report, update a spreadsheet or even create an hourlong, text-heavy presentation, if you must, right from your sleek Android tablet. We’ve been using the app for a while now, and our Word, Excel and PowerPoint files have never felt lighter.

Spotify
How big is your music collection? Ours? Oh, about 15 MILLION songs. Thanks to the Spotify app, we’ve got access to just about any song we could possibly imagine. It’s like we went crazy with a platinum card in iTunes, but in this case, one monthly fee gets it all, no picking and choosing. And buffering? Don’t let us catch you saying that dirty word around us. With Spotify, buffering is but a distant memory quickly fading into the sunset, just like our dreams of playing on stage with Mick and the Stones. But hey, at least we can listen to ’em whenever we want. That’s pretty much the same thing, right?

SwiftKey Tablet X
We’re not ashamed to admit it: Sometimes our tablet typing skills leave quite a bit to be desired. Well, they did before we downloaded the SwiftKey Tablet X app. We don’t know if the app actually installs tiny wizards inside our Android tablet or what, but there’s some kind of magic going on, because it predicts what we’re going to type better than any other keyboard we’ve ever used. If you try it out, see if you can write a whole email in fewer than 20 keystrokes.

Wolfram|Alpha
It started with eBay; we’d search that thing for hours trying to find the most obscure Star Wars stuff to bid on. A few years later, we wanted to see exactly when our favorite shows jumped the shark. Poor Fonzie. Right now, our latest net obsession is Wolfram|Alpha. We’ve had the app on our tablet for a couple of months now, and we can’t stop searching for…well, just about anything we can think of. Want a list of Superman’s nicknames? Curious when the word “solenoid” was first used? Wondering where our keys are hiding? All right, so maybe that last one’s still unknown, but seriously, good luck trying to stump the app with a real request.
