One of the first things I do when I arrive at any destination is whip out my phone and check in on Foursquare. And since today is officially Foursquare Day, it seemed fitting to “check out” (forgive my lameness) Foursquare and give you guys a complete rundown of what it’s all about.
Foursquare is a location-based social networking website that lets users with GPS-enabled mobile devices (smartphones) check in at various venues using either the mobile website or (most commonly) one of many apps. Using one of these methods will pull up nearby locations and you simply choose the one nearest you and check in. Those without a smartphone can still get in on the action and check in using SMS.
This service was established back in 2009 and currently has over 7 million users!
Check In: This is the main action on Foursquare. You can say where you are, see where your friends are and even create a To-Do list of places you want to visit.
Points: Each check in earns you points. You score more when you visit new places or become “mayor” of a specific venue.
Badges: These are icons you earn based on your activity. One badge I’ve earned is the Super Duper Swarm badge. I got this by checking in at a place where 500 others were checked in at the same time – the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas.
Tips: When you check in, you can see tips for that location left by other users and leave your own.
Mayorships: If you check in at a place more often than anyone else in a 60-day period, boom, you become the virtual mayor of that locale. Sometimes this status comes with perks. More on that in a moment.
Specials: When you check in, you’ll sometimes see a “Special Nearby” icon. This is often a discount or special offer from a store that rewards you for checking in. More on that in just a sec as well.
The idea for Foursquare Day came from a numbers-obsessed optometrist named Nate Bonilla-Warford. Since 42 = 16, he thought it’d be fun to check in on the fourth 16th of the year, otherwise known as April 16. The idea made its way to the people at Foursquare and the rest is social networking history. Just like Foursquare itself, the day is an incentive to get out, explore new places and meet up with friends.
