The Shack Checks Out Foursquare Day

One of the first things I do when I arrive at any destination is whip out my phone and check in on Foursquare. And since today is officially Foursquare Day, it seemed fitting to “check out” (forgive my lameness) Foursquare and give you guys a complete rundown of what it’s all about.

The Basics
Foursquare is a location-based social networking website that lets users with GPS-enabled mobile devices (smartphones) check in at various venues using either the mobile website or (most commonly) one of many apps. Using one of these methods will pull up nearby locations and you simply choose the one nearest you and check in. Those without a smartphone can still get in on the action and check in using SMS.

This service was established back in 2009 and currently has over 7 million users!

Essential Terminology
Check In: This is the main action on Foursquare. You can say where you are, see where your friends are and even create a To-Do list of places you want to visit.

Points: Each check in earns you points. You score more when you visit new places or become “mayor” of a specific venue.

Badges: These are icons you earn based on your activity. One badge I’ve earned is the Super Duper Swarm badge. I got this by checking in at a place where 500 others were checked in at the same time – the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas.

Tips: When you check in, you can see tips for that location left by other users and leave your own.

Mayorships: If you check in at a place more often than anyone else in a 60-day period, boom, you become the virtual mayor of that locale. Sometimes this status comes with perks. More on that in a moment.

Specials: When you check in, you’ll sometimes see a “Special Nearby” icon. This is often a discount or special offer from a store that rewards you for checking in. More on that in just a sec as well.

Foursquare Day
The idea for Foursquare Day  came from a numbers-obsessed optometrist named Nate Bonilla-Warford. Since 42 = 16, he thought it’d be fun to check in on the fourth 16th of the year, otherwise known as April 16. The idea made its way to the people at Foursquare and the rest is social networking history. Just like Foursquare itself, the day is an incentive to get out, explore new places and meet up with friends.

Foursquare Deals at The Shack
RadioShack  has been a longtime Foursquare participant. We even had our own badge for Holiday Heroes to earn for checking in at superhero locations like The Shack (getting the perfect gift instantly transforms anyone into a hero during the holidays).

RadioShack also rewards loyal fans for checking in at stores across the nation. This is where it gets good.

First-Timer Discount: The first time you check in at any RadioShack location before June 30, 2011 you’ll unlock a special to receive 20% off a qualifying in-store purchase.

Comeback Special: Visit The Shack again and you can unlock another discount to save 10% on a qualifying in-store purchase each time you check in before June 30, 2011.

Mayor’s Markdown: When you’ve earned the title of mayor at a RadioShack store, you can pull your political strings each time you check in and get 20% off a qualifying in-store purchase now through June 30, 2011.

So what are you waiting for? Grab your phone, explore your city and celebrate 4/16 by racking up some savings at The Shack.

It would be nice to have this kind of promotions on all countries. I’m on México and well, it’s a shame not having this kind of promotions here. Have a great foursquare day.

  • Nate Bonilla-Warford, OD

This is awesome! I was the kind of a geeky kid who built a calculator in middle school designed from scratch with my electrical engineer grandfather. Got me an Honorable Mention at the State Science Fair! I’m proud to say that the resisters, ICs, solder, wire-wrap tools, LEDS and every other component of the calculator was purchased at RadioShack! I still get a little sentimental when I walk in on of the locations.

Now I take my 18 month old in just to look at the various toys, cable adapters and batteries. I can’t wait until he is older so we can start doing some serious building!

Everyone who follows foursquare closely knows the specials RadioShack offers and that your business has increased because of it. We love this!

I’d love to talk to someone at RadioShack to see if any of the above info is useful for you. :)

The people at my local radio shack thought I was insane when I showed them my cell phone an asked for a discount. They had never heard of Foursquare and I did not receive a discount.

  • rickycadden

Brendan – I’m sorry to hear that – obviously that’s not the experience we want you to have. Can you please send an email to with the store details so we can follow up and make sure they know how to properly process the discount?

  • SarahBarnes

@Nate – thanks for the comment and hey, congrats on the State Science Fair honorable mention :) We love to talk/listen – so shoot us an email @ Hope you guys had a fun 4/4^2/11! We sure did.

just tried using my newbie discount at store number 012885 in Brooklyn. no one in the store knew of this discount. i was really looking forward to my 20%. radioshack failed.

  • Star

I just checked in for the first time and received no 20% off badge…. How do I get the discount?

  • Adam

    > receive 20% off a qualifying in-store purchase.

What qualifies? I don’t see any disclaimer stating "excluded" items…

    Love the Foursquare promotion!
No one at Radio Shack knows about and they cannot answer any questions! Even your corporate offices were unable to connect me to someone who could help answer.
    I went to:
    BRW ELECTRONICS, #22-B477, 972 PUTNEY RD STE 9, BRATTLEBORO, VT 05301, Phone: (802) 257-5229
and they had no idea. After looking it up, they were not able to tell me what items were available to purchase with this discount.
I’d rather shop local than go to WalMart or order from Amazon, but you guys are not making it easy!
I will cc: the help email address but if you can help me that would be great.

  • Mark

I too tried to checkin, using different accounts, to no avail. The people at Radio Shack didn’t know about the promotion, and I was never able to unlock the code or coupon to show them.

Not sure who goofed here, but neither Radio Shack nor Foursquare made me want to use them again.

  • Brad C.

I had the same experience @ Lyons Ave, Newark store. No one knows what this discount is or what it applies to. Had to walk away from purchase of laptop, multimeter, Bluetooth headset and electronic project components. Running out of time on 6/30 deadline. Same applied when I showed Google maps check-in offer for 20%.

    • Sarah Barnes

Hey Brad! I am sorry to hear that and I’m sorry that you weren’t able to use that discount towards your purchase. Thank you for letting us know! If you would like to give us any more information, send an email to Thanks again and have a nice day!
